What Should You Do With Your Loft Before Moving House?

When you’re preparing to move house, it’s easy to concentrate on the rooms you use every day. Kitchens need emptying, wardrobes need packing and furniture needs organising, but there’s one area of the home that’s surprisingly easy to overlook……the loft.

For many households, the loft has gradually become a storage space for everything that doesn’t have another home. Christmas decorations, suitcases, old toys, boxes of paperwork and possessions from years ago can all be hiding up there. Leaving it until the last few days before moving can create a much bigger job than expected.

Start Earlier Than You Think

Ideally, take a look through your loft several weeks before moving day. Even if it doesn’t appear particularly full, sorting through years of stored belongings can take time.

Bring everything down gradually and decide what you’re taking with you. Moving house can be the perfect opportunity to finally deal with boxes that haven’t been opened for years.

Separate everything into items you’re keeping, donating, selling, recycling or throwing away. There’s little benefit in paying to move belongings that you’ll simply dispose of once you reach your new home.

Don’t Forget the Awkward Items

Lofts often contain some of the most awkward things to move. Large suitcases, artificial Christmas trees, old furniture, children’s toys and bulky boxes may be difficult to get through a loft hatch.

Think about how these items are going to be brought down safely rather than leaving them until moving morning. If something was assembled or stored in the loft many years ago, you may even discover that it needs dismantling before it can be removed.

Pack Loft Contents Properly

Once you’ve decided what you’re keeping, pack it just as carefully as possessions from the rest of the house.

Use strong boxes rather than old or damaged cardboard boxes that may have weakened while sitting in the loft. Clearly labelling them LOFT can also make things much easier at your new property.

You may not want these boxes unpacked immediately, so keeping them together allows your removals team to place them somewhere suitable when they arrive.

Check the Loft One Last Time

Before finally leaving your old home, it’s worth doing one last check of the loft.

Look into corners, behind stored boards and around the loft hatch. It’s surprisingly easy for a small box, bag or Christmas decoration to be forgotten.

The same applies to garages, sheds and cupboards – a final walk around the property before handing over the keys can prevent something important being left behind.
